Welcome to Lorne House
Lorne House is a large Victorian villa in the lovely Wiltshire village of Box, just six miles from Bath. We offer an elegant charm, gorgeous rooms and a friendly, personal service. Lorne House provides the ideal base from which to explore both Bath and the nearby beautiful, historic villages of Lacock, Castle Combe, Bradford on Avon, Corsham and Avebury.
Lorne House was built in 1876 and was initially known as Lorne Villa. Between 1920-1928 when it was briefly renamed Journey’s End, the house was the childhood home of the Rev. W.V. Awdry, author of the Thomas the Tank Engine stories. He acknowledged that it was living at Journey’s End, lying in bed listening to the steam trains climbing Box Hill, that provided the inspiration for his classic tales.
Under new ownership since November 2016, Lorne House has been furnished to a very high standard; all rooms are en-suite, with wet-rooms or bathrooms, and come equipped with tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer, flat screen television, iron and ironing board. There is free wifi throughout the house. Our breakfasts are hearty and substantial, with fruit, cereals, toast, traditional cooked English breakfast or continental options, served in our lovely light and spacious dining room. Our locally sourced food includes Sandridge Farmhouse Wiltshire cure bacon and sausages and eggs from the village. Our marmalade is home-made.
We have lived in this area since 1999 and have a very detailed and personal knowledge of Bath and beyond; we are always happy to make recommendations and give advice.
CORONAVIRUS INFORMATION: As per the current government guidance, mask wearing is now optional. Hand sanitisers are available throughout the house.
We STRONGLY RECOMMEND that guests pre-book restaurants and any activities such as visits to the Roman Baths or The Thermae Bath Spa ahead of your stay to avoid disappointment. For a list of local restaurants and pubs please click HERE or refer to our Lorne House Guest Information Booklet.
